Marshall Library Orientation Guide
Volunteering Duties:
- Barcodes are scanned and checked in (this removes the item from the student’s record, so it’s important to make sure
that the items get checked in correctly; otherwise a book could get re-shelved and remain on the overdue list causing all
sorts of consternation).
- Items are placed on cart until ready to shelve (these can be organized by call number if there’s time; all LS books have
green tape at the bottom)
- Refer to the shelving guide below for shelving locations.
Using the Computer
- Patron’s card is expired (Renew)
- Barcode doesn’t exist (Ignore, and re-scan)
- Assist with checkout

- During story time, it would be helpful to shelve items before the next group browses and checks out items.
- Neatening and straightening the shelves (books that are falling down, books that are pushed far back into the shelf) is always helpful!
- I may have a special task that needs to be done, like applying stickers to books.
Using the Computer
- When returning/checking in books, make sure that “Bookdrop” mode has been selected. Scan item barcodes to check them in.
- When checking out books, make sure that “Check In/Out” mode has been selected. Scan the student’s barcode (in binder), then scan the item’s barcode. Keep an eye on the screen to be sure that there are no error messages popping up.
- Patron’s card is expired (Renew)
- Barcode doesn’t exist (Ignore, and re-scan)
- Students have the option of renewing items. Scan the student’s barcode to get into their record, change dropdown menu to “Renewal,” and scan the barcode of the item being renewed. If the student doesn’t have the item with them, let me know.
- Students may check out the same number of books as their grade level. For example, a second grader may have 2 books checked out at a time.
- If a student has one or two overdue items, he or she many not borrow any more items until overdues are returned. Frequent renewals should be red flags. We are happy to hold items for students in the meantime.
